What's New

What's New

Highlighting of FullTextSearch Hits in the Text-Viewer/Editor. FileScout will now mark the text in
the Editor/Viewer when you Search for a certain text (incl. the 'next' function). Please note, that for
the Edit-Mode this feature has to be enabled in the options - since the marking of the text might cause
unwanted modifications while searching in the content.

What's New
FileScout was initially released in March 2009 - this is now more than 4 years ago. It
has been a very exiting journey for me as a developer.
You might wonder why the version number has jumped from 2.9 directly to 4.0 - well the application
has been updated constantly over the years that I hope you agree that the 4.0 just reflects the age
of the good old FileScout.
BTW: This new 4.0 version will still work on BlackBerry Devices running OS4.3 - I know most
of you probably have a newer OS installed on their device - but IMHO it shows what you where able to
do as developer - even in the year 2007.
While the app functionality have been constantly improved over time there are some areas that
have been totally untouched since the initial release. One of these areas are the option screens.
Of course with each release new options have been added - but they have been never reorganized.
With the new release of FileScout v4.0 all option screens have been redesigned and have now a
fresh new look.
The main display have been adjusted and now a fine separator line will be painted between
each file.
If you don't like this new grid then you can disable this function in the Appearance Options
(by turning 'Show Grid' OFF)
The file names are now always centered to the thumbnail (no matter what size you have selected)
and for touch supporting devices the row height have also been tweaked.
These adjustments unfortunately require that all thumbnails (if you make use if the build in
cache) have to be recalculated.
All application icons have been reworked to match finally the new screen sizes of the latest
OS7.x devices (that's basically the core reason for the increased file size of the application))
The copy, move and delete file operations (when multiple files and/or folders have been selected)
could finally be canceled while they are running.
The File-Search (key short cut [SHIFT]+[S]) and the QuickFilter (key short cut [Q]) now highlight
the matches of the given search query in the result list.
The File-Search Screen layout have been revised and the additional checkbox options (to restrict
the search) are now auto-hiding themselves once a search is started - they will reappear when you
focus the search text field or the search button.
The Image-Manipulation Screen layout have been revised (the image resize options) and you should
now have a much better overview concerning your actual options for image resize operations.
Press and hold the ESC-Key will instantly terminate FileScout - there is no need any longer to go
up to the file system root - finally!
When you are press the file system browse buttons (the ones with the folder icon) in the option
screens in order to adjust a path (e.g. the startup directory) then now the displayed folder list
how at the button an additional button in order to select the current selected (or currently opened)
directory.
Also this build contains multiple fixes for tiny issues I have found while I was testing the
changes :-)
Finally you might wonder how it could be that so many changes have been implemented in such a
short period of time (since the last v2.9 release was just a couple of days ago). I don't really
have a good answer - it was just that I had a lot of fun coding for the legacy BlackBerry platform
and I felt the need that FileScout should look a bit better.

What's Fixed
The previous WiFi-Sharing build will/has expired at the 15. Jan 2013 - in order to continue to use the
WiFi-Sharing functionality with FileScout/FileScout Lite, you need to update your plugin.
It's recommend to updated the Plugin first and when asked for the required reboot, say 'later' and then instantly update FileScout as well. When you are prompted then for the reboot, confirm the reboot.
What's Changed
When on your BlackBerry device there are multiple ContentHandlers registered for a a file type
(extension or mime type) then FileScout will prompt you with a dialog and allow you to select with
which application you would like to open the file.
In this new version of FileScout this dialog will contain an additional checkbox "Do this
automatically for files with the extension '<EXT-HERE>' from now on." When you
select this checkbox FileScout will remember your choice next time you open a similar file.
If you like you can delete this selection again via the FileScout 'File Associations' Options. At
the bottom of the screen you will find the list of currently stored pre-selections and you can remove
them by pressing the 'Delete'-Button

This have been fixed in the new version. Thanks to F2 from the crackberry.com forum who was so kind and let me know the issue.
Fix: Upload of files to your Dropbox added accidently an additional <CR><LF> at the end of each file.
Well the "good" news is, that all your previously uploaded files does not get corrupted by the additional
<CR><LF>... On the other hand side this should not had happen in the first place and I am very
sorry that it took so long to identify & fix this issue.
If you wonder - What the heck is '<CR><LF>' ??? - This are two bytes: carriage return & line feed.
They represent a new line inside a text file - please don't start a rant about my simple explanation.

WiFi-Sharing allows you to up and download files to and from your BlackBerry Device via a modern Browser (like Chrome,
Firefox or Safari)
For Users of OS5 and above: The WiFi-Sharing Plugin comes with a WLAN SSID-Autostart feature! So you can configure the Plugin
to autostart the sharing service once your device is seeing (not necessarily connected to) a specific SSID (multiple SSIDs could
be configured). As soon as the Device does not have any connection to the SSID the Service will be automatically shut down (if you
are not using FileScout currently).
Improved Thumbnail-Cache Handling

This year in Amsterdam I have learned few more things about the BlackBerry JavaVM and how
to behave as an app running in a BlackBerry device. After the event I have reviewed a lot of
my code and made use of the new knowledge.
Most of these changes are tiny little ones - which are hard to mention and explain - but
the overall handling of the app seams to be much smoother.
Just as one example here: When you rename a file and the complete file name will be marked.
Once you decided to delete the complete old name then cursor position display will be finally
correct in this new build.
Another example is for touch devices where it could had happen that selecting a sub folder
would had instantly marked a file in the directory that will be opened - this is finally solved
in v2.8.0.2.
ImageViewer
The image pre-loading and caching of the ImageViewer have been completely reimplemented and
should be now way more smoother and you should see the clock/hourglass way more seldom, if at all.
Image Thumbnail generation & loading
Also as consequence of the code review the original thumbnail loading and caching code have been
thrown over board and has been created from scratch - I really hope you will notice the difference
in the app.
Checking the 6MiB file size limit when sending file(s) via BBM™
Sending files via BBM™ is limited to a maximal file size of six megabytes. When you try
to send larger files in the current version of the BBM™ SDK simply nothing happens after you
have selected the recipients. In order to avoid this confusing situation FileScout is already
checking for the max file size limit and does not display the BBM™ in the 'Send To...' dialog
if the file size limit is exceeded.

ZIP-Archive handling & performance
What's Changed
FileScout & FileScoutLite ZIP-file handing have been re-written
With the new v2.8.0.1 build there should be no limitation concerning the file size of ZIP-Archives
that you could browse or de-compress with FileScout (or FileScoutLite).
When you unzip a large (e.g. 100MB+) archive, please have in mind that you still hold a mobile device in
your hands (and not a PC or Mac equipped with a SSD). Most of the time that is required (to process an
ZIP-Archive) will be needed for the actual reading (of the compressed stream) and the writing (of the
de-compressed data).
The new build will also report almost instantly, if an archive can't be read by the application
(probably cause it is corrupted/broken).
Please note that even if most of the ZIP code have been rewritten FileScout is still not able to
read password protected archives - sorry.
