- GPS-Mode
A BlackBerry device, depending on the type and carrier, supports all or a subset of the following modes.
GSM based devices mostly support Standalone mode. Some GSM carriers have enhanced their GPS service offering,
supporting assisted GPS fixes on these devices. However, this requires BlackBerry® Device Software 4.6 or above
and the carrier must have provisioned the device with this service.
In the CDMA world, BlackBerry devices support all the modes below. However, some carriers may not support some of
these modes. Please check with your carrier to confirm.
iDEN devices support Standalone, Assisted and the Celltower mode. However, availability of assisted and Celltower
mode is dependent on the carrier.
- Sample Interval in Seconds
With the sample interval you specify the frequency in which GPSLogger will look for an GPS-fix. For technical reasons
the smallest values is 1 second.
- Test GPS Settings
With the Button 'Test GPS Settings' you are able to test the current selected GPS-Mode.
- Path directory
In order to be able to actually log your moment GPSLogger requires a working directory to be configured. During the initial
Configuration GPSLogger have created a working directory on the file system of your BlackBerry. If you are not happy with the
default setting or if the initial directory does not exist any longer you can specify a a different working path. When you
like to change the path then it's recommended to use the 'Browse'-Button (that's the button with the folder icon).
- AutoSave
GPSLogger will save the recorded path in the moment you stop the logging process. If you like to automatically store the
current progress of your movement you can enable the AutoSave feature which will store the current recorded path in the
specified time interval. You can select between the following options:
- OFF
- each 5 minutes
- each 15 minutes
- each hour
- each 4 hours
Using AutoSave can cause a short freeze of the application since the data have to be written in the background to the file
system of your device.
- Use inverted Elevation values
In older BlackBerry OS Versions there was a bug that returned the actual GPS elevation in a negative format. So instead of
235m the Code returned -235m. Since there is no good way to automatically detect, if your OS is effected there is a manual
option to invert the elevation values. This will not effect newer OS like 5.0, 6.0 or 7.0. As example my own initial Storm
running OS 4.7 had this issue. After it was updated to OS5 this problem was gone.
- Check for plausible Elevation values
Using the GPS-Signal of your device does not always return meaningful data. Specially the altitude is jittering. Therefore
GPSLogger is able to check for the plausibility of the Elevation changes. A altitude change of 20 meter while you just moved
1 meter horizontal sounds not plausible (as long as you do not log your parachute jump). By enabling this option GPSLogger
checks for the plausibility of the elevation changes. Please note that this functionality will only take effect when you actually
load a previously recorded path. When you log your movement GPSLogger will always store (& display) the actual values that
have been provided by the GPS-Signal.
- Specify own Path names
By default GPSLogger will auto name (current time and date) the recorded path. If you enable this option, you will be prompted to
enter a name for the recorded path in the moment you stop the logging.
- Allow start without GPS-Signal
When this option is enabled, GPSLogger will be automatically closed again, if your GPS Location provider (based on your GPSLogger
GPS-Settings) could be found. This option can be quite useful if you do not have a build in GPS-Antenna in your device and you are
using a Bluetooth GPS-Puck. So you instantly realize that you might have forgotten to pair the Puck with your device.
- Record only GPS-Locations with Speed
For some people it is not convenient to pause/unpause the logging each time they make a short break (or when they have to wait at
a traffic light). For this purpose you can specify a minimal speed that is required in order that a received GPS-fix will be added
to the current logged path. Have in mind, that with each GPS-Fix also a speed will be calculated.
Minimum Speed: Allows you to specify the minimal speed (in kmh or mph)). The input field is only active if the
'Record only GPS-Locations with Speed' checkbox is enabled
- Allow cursor movement while Logging
When you are logging you can still move along the current path with the cursor navigation pad (or the key short cuts). With
this option you can turn off this functionality completely.
- Automatic name for 'pause'
With GPSLogger you can mark any location on your path and add a comment to this location. If you enable this option GPSLogger will
automatically at the comment 'Pause' to your last recorded GPS-fix.
- Use 'brute force' LocationProvider recovery
A observer process will be started who is monitoring the GPS-Provider - if the GPS-Provider is not providing a GPS-fix in a certain amount
of time the GPS-Provider will be reinitialized no matter of the current status. This options hould be only enabled if you experienced
"hang ups" of the GPS-Provider (no new GPS locations will be recorded).
- Confirm deletion of Paths and Points
In the Location- and PathManager you can simply delete old entries by pressing the 'DEL'-Key. If this option is enabled each deletion
needs to be confirmed in an additional dialog.
- Confirm Pause and Stop while recording
Sometimes people have pressed 'Pause' or 'Stop' by accident (or even worse without notice). If you fear that you are also belonging to
this group of people you can enabled this option which brings up and additional confirmation dialog before the the pause or stop logging
action will be performed.
- Confirm Exit of GPSLogger II
In order to avoid that you close GPSLogger by accident (e.g by pressing 'ESC' once time to often) you can enable this option which will
show an confirmation dialog before GPSLogger will actually be shut down.
