FileScout - User Manual - Overview

A file manager Software for BlackBerry® Devices

The "all in one" file, zip, text and image manager for your BlackBerry®

Introduction

The main motivation to create FileScout was, that I have missed a simple application that allowed me simple copy and move operations, I wanted to be able to rename files & directories, handle of ZIP archives and open all multi media files with a simple click. I did not found anything like that on my BlackBerry® device and wondered a bit since on other OS applications like Windows™ Explorer or MacOS™ Finder are taken for granted.

Startup

Once you start FileScout you will see all available root devices of your BlackBerry® device. The number of root devices depends from your device as well as a SDCard is present. Some show 'system' and 'store' others only show 'store' - so do not have any concerns, if your particular device does not have all folders that you see here on screenshots.
Beside the name of the file or directory you find a icon that indicate the type of the file/directory.

File size units

You might wonder a bit about 'KiB', 'MiB' - What the heck is this? Well it's quite a big misunderstanding in the IT world. In the SI prefix's are well defined: 'kilo' means always '1000' of something (like 1000m are 1km) [see: SI prefix]. A lot of people believe, that one kilo byte is equal to 1024byte - but that's simply not true. One kilo bytes are 1000 bytes. FileScout devide the file size in bytes by 1024 and the correct units are KiB and MiB they are defined by IEC 60027 [see: Binary prefix].

Icon Overview

This is the list of the current supported file/directory types - please note, that the 'Up to Parent' Icon is a special item in FileScout that allows to navigate to the parent of the current directory.

Basic operations

Copy a single file (or a group of files) from one folder to another - to do so:

  1. select a single file (or mark multiple files by pressing the SPACE-key) in any directory
  2. choose  Put '[SourceFile]' on vClipboard  from the menu
  3. browse/navigate to the target folder
  4. select  Copy '[SourceFile]' to '[CurrentDir]'  from the menu.

Move a single file (or a group of files) from one folder to another - to do so:

  1. select a single file (or mark multiple files by pressing the SPACE-key) in any directory
  2. choose  Put '[SourceFile]' on vClipboard  from the menu
  3. browse/navigate to the target folder
  4. select  Move '[SourceFile]' to '[CurrentDir]'  from the menu.
